This 1,330-hectare project, located on currently undeveloped land (Farm 39) just north of the existing Port of Walvis Bay, represents a transformative expansion far beyond the current port’s roughly 105 - hectare footprint. Planned features include approximately 10,000 metres of quay walls and jetties supporting around 30 large berths, a massive dry bulk terminal capable of handling over 100 million tonnes per annum, liquid bulk facilities for Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), multipurpose and break-bulk terminals, ship and rig repair yards, an oil and gas supply base, and enhanced rail, road, pipeline and conveyor links to inland industrial areas. Valued in billions of Namibia dollars, the project is designed to overcome the capacity constraints of the existing deep-water port and meet surging regional demand for bulk handling. The mega port will facilitate efficient export trade and logistics for landlocked neighbouring countries including Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Malawi and Angola. Key commodities include coal from Botswana (potentially via the Trans-Kalahari Railway), copper and other minerals from the Copperbelt region of Zambia and the DRC, manganese, uranium, and agricultural products. Corridors such as the Trans-Kalahari, Walvis Bay - Ndola -Lubumbashi, and Trans - Cunene will provide shorter, more reliable routes to global markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas compared with congested alternatives.
