They key principle is to access a 12-month yield of cashew nuts, when the Tanzanian season finishes, the Ivorian season starts – resulting in no seasonal cash flow fluctuations. China ranked as a notable importer of cashews in 2025, with total imports valued at approximately USD 217 million. A substantial portion of China’s cashew supply arrives as shelled (processed) cashew kernels from Vietnam. In 2025, China overtook the United States to become Vietnam’s largest cashew export market, with Vietnamese shipments to China valued at around USD 1.12 billion. China imports daily about 111 tonnes of cashew nuts! Côte d’Ivoire has expanded their domestic processing significantly, converting hundreds of thousands of tonnes into kernels in 2025 by companies such as Robust International, Valency and Royal Nuts - increasing its ability to supply higher-value products. Tanzania continues to export the bulk of its crop as raw nuts, mainly to Asia, while developing processing capacity and recording shipments of kernels to destinations such as China. However, trade data reflects a significant increase in direct consignments of cashew kernels from both Tanzania and Côte d’Ivoire to Chinese buyers in China. Overall, African cashew exports support rural incomes and foreign exchange across producing countries. Rising Chinese demand, met largely through Vietnamese processing of African raw nuts, supplemented by direct African shipment underscores the strategic importance of the China market.
