The Northern Corridor (NC) stands as one of Africa's most heavily utilised trade routes, linking the Port of Mombasa in Kenya to the landlocked economies of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and Eastern DRC. Spanning roughly 2,000 km by road and rail, it serves as a critical lifeline for millions, facilitating the movement of goods like coffee, tea, minerals, petroleum, and manufactured imports.

Its strategic importance lies in reducing transit times and costs for regional trade, supporting over 5% of Africa's GDP through connected economies. Investments in infrastructure upgrades, one-stop border posts, and digital tracking have boosted efficiency, though challenges like congestion, poor maintenance, and bureaucratic delays persist. As Africa pursues the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA, - the world’s largest Free Trade Area), the NC exemplifies how enhanced connectivity and reduced tariffs can drive intra - African Trade across East and Central Africa.

The North-South Corridor (NSC) stands as one of Africa's most strategically important trade routes. Spanning approximately 10,000 km, it connects the port of Durban in South Africa northward through Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and into the Democratic Republic of Congo at Kolwezi, with spurs to Malawi and Mozambique. It overlays key Trans-African Highways and serves seven Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), countries, facilitating over 60% of regional trade.

Primarily transporting minerals from the Copperbelt, Agricultural goods, and Manufactured imports, the NSC acts as the backbone of Southern African commerce. Initiatives under Common Market for Eastern & Southern Africa (COMESA), East African Community(EAC), and SADC, focus on infrastructure upgrades, trade facilitation, and transforming it into a smart economic corridor for industrialisation and job creation.

Despite challenges like border delays, the NSC drives economic integration, growth, and poverty reduction across the continent. Its continued development promises enhanced competitiveness for Africa's landlocked economies.
